I am really happy with the books that I read in June, and I am thrilled to be able to recommend every one! I don’t enjoy DNF-ing books so sometimes I will power through it even if I am struggling which often results in disappointing reads and the beginnings of a reading slump. Thankfully my four books this month were far from disappointing! They were all really different to each other and I enjoyed exploring some diversity!
The first book that I finished in June was Dreams of Gods and Monsters by Laini Taylor which I rated a 4.5 stars! It was a beautiful end to one of my favourite series in the world. Laini Taylor is a lyrically spectacular writer who I greatly admire and love. I was a bit concerned at first that there were going to be too many plot points that needed solving within the book – especially with the introduction of a huge new strand – but as always Laini managed to weave everything together neatly and I was not disappointed. This series is a must-read for fantasy lovers and those who love words in general.
The second book that I read in June was Simon Vs. The Homosapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli which I rated a 3.5 stars. This book was super sweet and cute and I read it within 24 hours. It was a really easy read that made me feel warm and happy. The only reason that I didn’t give it a higher rating was because it did fall a little short for me in terms of complexity and I wasn’t always super invested in the characters. I am not usually a huge contemporary reader which could have contributed to this opinion but I also felt that the writing was quite simple and I wasn’t being sucked completely into the world. In saying that, I would still definitely recommend this as a good summer read with a sweet romance.
The third book that I read in June was The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers which caught my eye a while ago, but I was inspired to pick up for Pride Month. I gave this a 3.75 stars! I was super excited to get back into a sci-fi novel and this did not disappoint. The world was fun and complex and I really enjoyed how everything was built. The standout aspect of this story is definitely the characters and the diversity. There are varying species with different sexualities, values, beliefs, traditions, mannerisms, and general lives. I loved the relationships and friendships between all the characters and the support and love between them all.
Finally I also read Lord of Shadows by Cassandra Clare. At the beginning of the month I almost convinced myself that I wouldn’t buy this book and wouldn’t have time to read it for a few months but I caved half-way through June. I gave this book a 4.5 stars and I absolutely loved it. I enjoyed Lady Midnight when I read it last year but this one absolutely blew me away! I felt more connected to the characters, I realised how much I had missed this world (and how much I adore it) and I just found it to be thoroughly enjoyable. I loved seeing snippets of my favourite characters from TMI, and the interactions between everyone was wonderful. After that ending I’m not sure how I’ll make it to 2019 for the next book, but if it is as good as this I am willing to wait!
